Advanced Training - PREP

If you have relevant training, professional or research experience from before starting Advanced Training, you may be able to have it recognised. This page covers eligibility, what you can apply for and application forms.

Overview

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lets you have relevant experience completed before you start a recognised RACP training program — so you don't repeat training you've already done. If approved, RPL can exempt you from one or more program requirements.

General eligibility

You can apply if you're a current trainee — including Fellows in Training — enrolled in any RACP Division, Faculty or Chapter program in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand. 

Your application can only be assessed once you have started your first training rotation and it has been approved.

 

RPL doesn't apply to Overseas Trained Physicians seeking recognition as comparable to Australian or Aotearoa New Zealand trained physicians. We recommend using the Specialist Recognition Pathway instead.

 

What you can apply for 

Three categories of RPL are available. You can apply across more than one.

Professional experience (rotations)

Structured, supervised work completed before entering Advanced Training. There are 3 sub-types. 

Another RACP program
For example, certified time in a different Advanced Training specialty.
Non-RACP college
Training under another specialist Australian or Aotearoa New Zealand college, or overseas equivalent authority.
Outside formal training
Exceptional cases only. Minimum 6 months FTE in a continuous role, equivalent responsibility and supervision. You must provide evidence that prospective application was not reasonably possible.

Research Project requirement

If you've completed eligible research before entering Advanced Training, it may be recognised in place of the mandatory Research Project.

Eligible types
  • Research doctoral degree (PhD or MD, primary qualifications not eligible)
  • Master's or higher degree by research
  • Major project in a Master's by coursework
  • First-author publication in a peer-reviewed indexed journal

The topic must relate to human subjects or populations, epidemiology, education, leadership, medical humanities, or areas applicable to patient or population care.

Research completed during training isn't eligible for RPL — it may qualify under the separate Research Project Exemption process.

You can apply for RPL for any of the following, as long as your program's curriculum doesn't require them to be completed during active training:

  • Courses, workshops or meetings
  • Presentations, case studies, case reports or case report abstracts
  • Specialty-specific research projects

Rules and limits

The following conditions apply to all RPL applications, regardless of which category you're applying under.

No double counting

You can't count the same experience twice. Experience already recognised toward Basic Training can't be reused for Advanced Training.

Cross-program experience

If you're in dual or conjoint training, the same experience may apply toward both programs — submit a separate application for each. If you're applying for research RPL across more than one program, you only need to submit one application to the most relevant Committee.

Maximum RPL allowed

RPL can't exceed two-thirds of your total program length. This ensures the College maintains oversight of training quality and that all trainees have enough exposure to local healthcare systems.

Currency

Your experience must have been completed within 5 years of entering the training program.

Professional experience completed more than 5 years ago may still be eligible if:

  • the gap was due to flexible training arrangements (part-time, parental or medical leave), and
  • you can show your skills and knowledge are still current.

Research Project experience can have been completed at any time, as long as currency can be demonstrated.

Exams

RACP examinations are not eligible for RPL. This includes Divisional Written and Clinical Examinations, AFPHM Oral, AFOEM Written and Practical, AFRM Entry Phase, Fellowship Written and Clinical Examinations, and AChSHM Exit Assessment.

General questions

I've applied to enter my training program but haven't started my first rotation yet. Should I apply for RPL now? 

Not yet — you can only apply once you've started your first training rotation. Your application won't be assessed until that rotation has been validated.

That said, start preparing early. Gather your supporting documents as soon as possible so you're ready to submit by the deadline.


I've completed 2 years of Advanced Training in Cardiology and I'm starting General and Acute Care Medicine. Can I apply for RPL for my Cardiology training?

Yes. If you're changing Advanced Training programs or entering dual training, you can apply to your Training Program Committee/Training Program Subcommittee within the first 6 months of your new program to have your prior experience recognised through RPL.


Why can't I count experience gained during a training interruption? 

RPL is designed for experience that was planned in advance and completed within the College's framework — with proper curricula, supervision, feedback and support.

If you're currently on an interruption and have an opportunity to start clinical training or research, contact the College straight away to ask about prospective approval.

In some cases, non-clinical experience gained during an interruption may be eligible for RPL toward a different or later program — as long as it meets the RPL principles and it wasn't reasonably possible to apply prospectively.


What counts as an 'appropriate training site'?

The assessor will decide whether your training site is appropriate for the experience. In most cases the site needs to have a certain level of College accreditation, though some experiences — such as non-core training — may be completed at an unaccredited site in some circumstances.

Check the accreditation guidelines in your program's training requirements and the accredited settings list for your program. Contact Training Services if you're unsure.


I completed training under a College Training Program Committee last year that hasn't been certified yet. I've changed programs — can I apply for RPL for that training?

Yes, you can submit your application before the deadline. However, it won't be assessed until a certification decision has been made for that training period.


What if I didn't complete any workplace assessments during my experience?

You don't need to have completed workplace assessments — but including evidence of equivalent educational activities will strengthen your application.

If you did complete College workplace assessments during the experience, submit these with your application. If you didn't, a letter of support from a supervisor or referee can be used instead.

Letters of support must:

  • be written on hospital letterhead
  • describe the type of position you held
  • confirm that your work or training was satisfactory
  • include the dates and subspecialty of the position
  • include details of any relevant accreditation held by the hospital

If you're unable to provide evidence of equivalent educational activities, the assessor may ask you to complete additional assessments before you finish your training program.


I completed 9 months at 0.5 FTE outside a formal specialty training program. Does this count?

No — the minimum is 6 months of full-time equivalent (FTE) continuous experience. At 0.5 FTE, 9 months equals 4.5 months FTE, which falls short of the minimum. You would need at least 12 months at 0.5 FTE to meet the 6-month FTE requirement.


Professional experience questions

What evidence strengthens a professional experience application?

Strong applications include:

Supervisor, progress or assessor reports covering the period of experience
Completed workplace-based assessments (for example, mini-CEX, DOPS, multisource feedback, learning and observation captures)
Logbooks or records of clinical activity
Certificates of completion or formal training records
Confirmation of level of responsibility and supervision arrangements
Evidence of ongoing educational activities during the experience

Can I use overseas qualifications as evidence?

Yes — overseas certificates and qualifications can be submitted as supporting evidence. When you do, map your experience clearly to the relevant RACP curriculum and accredited settings list.

All overseas documents must be authenticated copies certified by a Justice of the Peace. Documents not in English must be translated and authenticated before submission.


How much RPL can be granted for professional experience?
  • Up to 12 months in most cases
  • Up to 24 months in exceptional circumstances, if the experience was part of a formal specialty training program

What won't be considered under Professional Experience?
  • The intern year (PGY1)
  • PGY2, unless you couldn't have applied prospectively
  • Experience taken during an interruption to RACP training
  • Experience in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand before you held general registration (AHPRA or MCNZ)
  • Basic Training experience completed before completing all Basic Training requirements
  • RACP examinations — including Divisional Written and Clinical Examinations, AFPHM Oral, AFOEM Written and Practical, AFRM Entry Phase, Fellowship Written and Clinical Examinations, and AChSHM Exit Assessment 

Research project questions


What evidence can I use for a research project application?
Degree certificate and transcript (authenticated if overseas)
Thesis or major project report, or peer-reviewed publication with author details
Evidence the topic area aligns with accepted RPL research categories
Evidence of ongoing currency of research competence

 

How to apply

Check your deadline

Professional experience applications must be submitted within 6 months of your first approved training rotation. Research and other requirements must be submitted within 12 months.  If you've missed the deadline due to extenuating circumstances, include a cover letter to the Training Program Committee (TPC) explaining why. The TPC will decide whether to accept your late application before it's assessed.

Review the curriculum and assess your experience

Read the relevant program curriculum, program requirements and the RPL Policy. Compare your prior experience against the curriculum standards and progression criteria for the phase you're seeking recognition for.

Gather your evidence

Your evidence must demonstrate competency, not just time served. Strong applications include the same kind of evidence used for prospective applications and routine progression decisions — demonstrating consistency of skills, knowledge and professional behaviour. Sign your completed form and keep a copy.

Submit your application form

Email all documents as PDFs to the Advanced Training inbox:

A Program Officer will contact you with next steps. An application fee will be charged after your application has been processed.

What happens next

Your application will be assessed by the Training Program Committee (or its delegate) overseeing your program, against the program requirements and RPL principles.

Assessments are typically completed within 3 months of receiving your completed application. This may take longer if additional information is needed.
