Basic Training

If you have relevant training or professional experience from before starting Basic Training, you may be able to have it recognised — avoiding duplication and helping you plan your training pathway.

Overview

If your RPL application is approved, you may be exempted from one or more Basic Training program requirements. This means you can progress through your training without repeating experience you have already completed.

Eligibility

To apply for RPL you must be registered with the relevant RACP Basic Training program. Your learning experience must have been completed before entering the program and must meet the RPL principles set out in the policy.

RPL will not be considered for the intern year (postgraduate year one), postgraduate year two (unless you can demonstrate you could not have applied prospectively), or for experiences completed before obtaining general registration with AHPRA or registration in general scope of practice with MCNZ.

RPL doesn't apply to Overseas Trained Physicians seeking recognition as comparable to Australian or Aotearoa New Zealand trained physicians. We recommend using the Specialist Recognition Pathway instead.

What you can apply for

RPL for Basic Training is available for professional experience requirements only.

Common questions and rules

Find answers to common questions about RPL eligibility, rules and categories.

Rules and limits

The following conditions apply to all RPL applications.

Maximum RPL allowed

RPL can't exceed two-thirds of your total program length. This ensures the College maintains oversight of training quality and that all trainees have enough exposure to local healthcare systems.

Currency

Your experience must have been completed within 5 years of entering the training program.

Professional experience completed more than 5 years ago may still be eligible if:

  • the gap was due to flexible training arrangements (part-time, parental or medical leave), and
  • you can show your skills and knowledge are still current.

General questions

I've applied to enter my training program but haven't started my first rotation yet. Should I apply for RPL now?

Not yet — you can only apply once you've started your first training rotation. Your application won't be assessed until that rotation has been validated.

That said, start preparing early. Gather your supporting documents as soon as possible so you're ready to submit by the deadline.

What if I didn't complete any workplace assessments during my experience?

You don't need to have completed workplace assessments — but including evidence of equivalent educational activities will strengthen your application.

If you did complete College workplace assessments during the experience, submit these with your application. If you didn't, a letter of support from a supervisor or referee can be used instead.

Letters of support must:

  • be written on hospital letterhead
  • describe the type of position you held
  • confirm that your work or training was satisfactory
  • include the dates and subspecialty of the position
  • include details of any relevant accreditation held by the hospital

If you're unable to provide evidence of equivalent educational activities, the assessor may ask you to complete additional assessments before you finish your training program.

Is prevocational training eligible for RPL?

No. From 1 January 2015, the second year of the NSW Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) intern program can no longer be counted towards Basic Training through RPL. If you are entering Basic Training after completing this program, you are encouraged to apply prospectively for BPT1 instead.Shape

I'm an IMG who recently gained general registration. Can I apply for RPL for time worked while waiting for my registration?

No. Time worked in Australia while waiting to sit the AMC Part II Examination is not eligible for RPL.

Similarly, time worked in Aotearoa New Zealand before gaining registration in a general scope of practice is not eligible for RPL. You may, however, apply for that time prospectively.

Professional experience questions

What evidence generally strengthens a professional experience application?
Supervisor, progress or assessor reports covering the period of experience
Completed workplace-based assessments (e.g. mini-CEX, DOPS, multisource feedback, learning and observation captures)
Logbooks or records of clinical activity
Certificates of completion or formal training records
Confirmation of level of responsibility and supervision arrangements
Evidence of ongoing educational activities during the experience

Can I use overseas qualifications as evidence?
Overseas certificates and qualifications can be submitted as supporting evidence. Map your experience clearly to the relevant RACP curriculum and accredited settings list. All overseas documents must be authenticated copies certified by a Justice of the Peace. Documents not in English must be translated and authenticated.

What is the limit to the amount of RPL that can be granted under Professional Experience?
  • 12 months in most cases (1 phase of training)
  • In exceptional circumstances up to 24 months if the experience was part of a formal specialty training program (2 phases)

What won't be considered under Professional Experience?
  • The intern year (PGY1)
  • PGY2, unless you couldn't have applied prospectively
  • Experience taken during an interruption to RACP training
  • Experience in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand before you held general registration (AHPRA or MCNZ)
  • Basic Training experience completed before completing all Basic Training requirements

How to apply

1
Check your deadline

Your application must be submitted within 6 months of your first validated training rotation.  If you've missed the deadline due to extenuating circumstances, include a cover letter to the Training Program Committee (TPC) explaining why. The TPC will decide whether to accept your late application before it's assessed.

2
Read the policy and your program requirements

Review the [RPL Policy] and your program curriculum and requirements before you start. Make sure you understand what RPL is, whether you're eligible and what you can apply for.

3
Complete your application and gather your evidence

Your evidence needs to show competency, not just time served. Use the same kind of evidence you'd provide for a prospective application or routine progression decision.  Sign your completed form and keep a copy.

4
Submit your application via email

Email all documents as PDFs to the Basic Training inbox:

5
What happens next

A Program Officer will contact you with next steps. An application fee will be charged after your application has been processed.

Your application will be assessed by the Training Program Committee (or its delegate) overseeing your program, against the program requirements and RPL principles.

Assessments are typically completed within 3 months of receiving your completed application. This may take longer if additional information is needed.
